ART INSPIRATION- ARTIST ANNA CHROMY

Considered as Europe’s most exhibited sculpture, artist Anna Chromy is now one of the circle of Grand Masters as the first Western artist to honoured by China and have a solo exhibits in Beijing. The first solo exhibition by any western artist at the National Museum in Beijing. The Exhibition runs from October 12th to 25th and features 15 of her large sculptures, 20 small sculptures and 30 drawings.

Anna Chromy is the first woman to be awarded the “Premio Michelangelo” sculpture award for her work “The Cloak of Conscience”. The beautiful sculpture that depicts a faceless figure hooded and shrouded in cloth became a spiritual symbol for peace, harmony and new found conscience for many people.

In 2012, the president of the British Olympic Committee, Lord Moynihan, invited Anna to design the sculpture for the athlete’s Olympic village.

Born in Bohemia, Czech Republic in 1940, Ana started as a painter. But a life-threatening accident turned her attention to sculpture.
“I had many sufferings in my life, but this accident was the worst. It did not completely change my view of life, but it taught me how fragile we human beings are, in every respect. With this sense of fragility comes the understanding how precious life is and that we should live it in a more conscious way, not just for us, but for all our loved ones and beyond.”

Now the Chinese have fallen in love with her work and are honouring her with the first solo artist exhibition for a Westerner at the hugely prestigious National Museum which fronts onto Tiananmen Square.

EXPLAINING THE WHITE MALE PRIVILEGE – FEATURING SASHEER ZAMATA BY ACLU

Actress, comedian and ACLU celebrity ambassador Sasheer Zamata, created a great video with ACLU to explain the fight for gender and race inequality. It wonderfully explains the structural discrimination against women in employment, education, healthcare, housing, and criminal justice through advocacy and public education.

The ACLU Women’s Rights Project was co-founded in 1972 by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who called women’s rights “an essential part of the overall human rights agenda.”

UTILITARIAN VERSUS ROMANTICS - MENSWEAR SPRING 2016

Fashion usually reflects what is currently happening the social and political culture our society. So it’s really interesting that for many seasons now fashion is adopting two polarized ideas- Romanticism and Utilitarianism. This really an indicative, that with technology, information and trends moving on accelerated speed, our society feels like the whole world is at the crossroad.

Menswear spring 2016 you could categorized most of the collection between utilitarian or romantics style.

UTILITARIAN
A belief that the best action is the one that maximizes utility, Utilitarianism in fashion started during the 1940’s when fabrics were rationed.  The clothes were designed for function and durability.  The utilitarian style was adopted again during the 1950’s when minimalism and futurism was in vogue due the space race.  The late 1980’s and early 1990’s designers like Helmut Lang and Prada adopted the design as form of minimalist protest from the decade of over  excess of the 1980’s.  During the tech bubble of the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the utilitarian style become fashionable again. This is probably due to that most of the nouveau riches of the Silicon Valley are more compatible with the working class values.
Utilitarian style is back again with the rise of the norm core fashion that started from hipsters’ ironic sense of humour, after exhausting the dandy look for years.
