Top 20 Spring/Summer 2009 Campaign

I know this is late but between being sick and being buried with other projects my top 20 spring/summer campaign list took a long time to finish. Iconic models are still staring major campaign; Christy Turlington for Escada and Bally, Kate Moss for Versace, Shalom Harlow & Eva Herzagova for H&M just to name a few. I think with the economy fashion and luxury brands amping up the creativity and glamour to entice shoppers. There are a lot of beautiful spring/summer campaigns right now.
Here is my run down of top 20 best spring/summer 2009 campaign.

1)LANVIN
Lanvin Women: Model: Iselin Steiro, Photographer: Steven Meisel, Make Up: Pat McGrath, Hair: and Guido Palau, Styling: Edward Enninful

Lanvin Men: Gavin Jones @Models 1 and Fabian @Nine Daughters and a Stere Jono Namara, Photographer: Craig McDean, Make Up: And Peter Philips, Hair: Julien D'Ys, Styling: Joe McKenna

During Alber Elbaz spring/summer presentation for the house of Lanvin, he claimed that he was seeking for clothes with emotion. So even with the tough economy he wanted to design clothes that women would die for to have. Not only did he showed a breathtaking collection, the house of Lanvin produced the most beautiful spring/summer campaign for this year. Shot by the legendary Steven Meisel the romantic feeling of the photos mimicked the exuberant of self love that women would feel wearing the clothes. The photos reflected the grandeur but very modern elements of the Elbaz clothes.

Decadent and divine is also the theme for Lanvin Homme’s spring/summer campaign. Lucas Ossendrijver presented a new take on 80’s inspired clothing so it also not surprising the Lanvin men’s campaign would have some 80’s influenced on it. The photos have the look of Neville Brody’s work specially on “The Face”.

2) PRADA
Prada Women -Photographer: Steven Meisel, Models: Anna Jagodzinska, Giedre Dukausukaite, Katrin Thormann, Nimue Smit, Sigrid Agren, Toni Garrn, Viktoriya Sasonkina, Ymre Stiekema

Prada Men: - Photographer: Hedi Slimane, Models: Louis Simonon and Claude Simonon

For Prada spring/summer campaign for this year, it is all about neo classicism mixed with rebellious overtone. When models paraded at Prada spring collection looking like a Italian 50’s femme fatales coming from a post coital with their lovers – rumpled, crinkled clothes , disarranged in various state of falling-off you will get the idea that for this spring and summer it will be all about being sexy in Muicca Prada style. Steven Meisel lined-up the models shamelessly reveling in their femininity. They all looked like the starlets of CinecittĂ  era. Too add more classic influence Meisel made the photos look like chiaroscuro paintings. The high contrast white background and porcelain skin with the dark and silky colors of the outfits. The campaign completely captured Prada’s message of new classic glamour and eroticism for this season.

Continuing the theme of “new classicism with a rebel edge” Miuccia Prada cited her inspiration for this spring/summer collection was a man poised between fragility and power, hanging in the balance—in other words, between extremes. For Prada men’s campaign, shot by former Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane the photos are black and white portraits of Louis and Claude Simonon, sons of Paul and Tricia Simonon, the bass player and manager of Punk band The Clash. Prada said the brothers were photographed “in moments of reflection and introspection. The photos look like very classic portraits and yet there are some nihilistic appearances on them.

3) HERMES
Photographer: Darius Khonji, Models: Angela Lindvall

LA BELLE EVASION is title of this campaign. It’s simply divine. The campaign exudes simple elegance and beauty.

4) HUGO BY HUGO BOSS
Photographer: Mario Sorrenti, Models: Raquel Zimmermann, Adrian Bosch

Mario Sorrenti is one of the masters of lights in photography. And if you remember his amazing past editorial story based on Goya, He certainly did again a wonderful series of photos based on a painter. This time it’s Francis Bacon. Shot in Berlin studio the interplay of light and shadows gave the space illusionary depth and colourful components.

Dramatic poses by than non other than top female model Raquel Zimmermand and male model Adrian Bosch added to edgy theme of the campaign and avant-garde flair of the spring/summer HUGO by Hugo Boss collection.

The amazing silhouettes and brilliant hues really one of the most eye catching campaign for this season.

5) DSQUARED 2
Photographer: Steven Meisel, Models: Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista

Supermodels catfight from Steven Meisel for DSquared summer/spring 2009. Linda and Naomi in very sexy stylized fight shot. Two icons in a campaign how can you not love it.

I also love the simplicity of the ads for men. They look like vintage posters that coincide with the barbershop era influence of the spring/summer collection.

6) DOLCE & GABBANA
Photographer: Steven Klein, Models:Carol Trentini, Mariacarla Boscono, Karlie Kloss; David Gandy, Noah Mills, Julien Quevenne and Adam Senn

Steven Klein made the whole campaign look like an outtake from modern filming of Luchino Visconti’s film “The Leopard”. The campaign is dark, sexy and majestic.

7) LOEWE
Photographer: Steven Klein, Models: Amber Velleta, Garrett Neff, Chad White

In continuation of Loewe highly provocative ads Steven Klein hits gold again with this campaign. Again it takes a legendary supermodel to amplify the glamour and sex appeal of a campaign, and Amber Velleta who is becoming more captivating than ever is perfect for the cast. The inclusion of the two hottest male model right now Garreth Neff and Chad White help a lot too making Loewe’s spring/summer campaign as one of the most seductive and alluring campaign this season.

8) YVES SAINT LAURENT

Photographer: Inez van Lamsweerde + Vinoodh Matadin, Model: Claudia Schiffer, Art Director: Ezra Petronio, Make Up Artist: Tom Pecheux, Hair: Luigi Murenu, Stylist: Melanie Ward

This campaign is reminiscent of Yves Saint Laurent photos by Helmut Newton. It’s very sexy in old Hollywood style. Claudia Schiffer is perfect as role of femme fatale.

9) MARC JACOBS
Photographer: Juergen Teller, Models: Raquel Zimmermann, Ryan McGinley

This is very fun and quirky campaign. Raquel Zimmermann, dressed in modern reinterpretation of 1930’s woman’s clothes doing fun poses on the orchard gives in a subtle way honoring the journey of American women during suffrage who are driven by bright hope of the future.

10) CHANEL
Photographer: Karl Lagerfeld, Model: Heidi Mount

Silent meditations and reflections are the things that come up on my mind whenever I look at this campaign. Shot on the house on the banks of Lake Champlain in Vermont Karl Lagerfeld described it as “so Emily Dickinson”. The campaign is inspired by the works of Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi. This campaign is beautiful, moody and poetic. Heidi Mount – 21 year old American model from Salt Lake City who opened the 2009 spring/summer ready to wear show is perfect cast too.

11) MISSONI
Photographer: Steven Meisel, Models: Isabeli Fontana and Natasha Poly, Mat Gordon, Danny Schwarz, Stylist: Marie Amelie Sauve, Makeup: Pat McGrath, Hair: Guido Palau

This is a very witty campaign that reflects the “long summer leisure days’ spirit of the both women/men spring/summer collection and the labels famous zigzag pattern. The campaign evokes fun, luxury and glamour just like the label.

12) SISLEY
Photographer: Camilla Akrans, Models: Åsa Engström, Helena Schröder, Hanna Hojman, Victor Norlander

This campaign reminds me of the Raphael’s “The Three Graces” painting. As the three graces are goddess of charm, beauty and creativity so as Sisley’s this spring/summer collection. The results the photos are beautiful and have the classic painting aesthetics.

13) LOUIS VUITTON
Photographer: Steven Meisel, Model: Madonna

If you mix together Marc Jacobs, Madonna and Steven Meisel in one project the only probable result would be iconic and divine.

14) TOMMY HILFIGER
Photographer: Phil Poynter, Models: Shannan Click, Missy Rayder, Matt Gordon, Paul Stiell and Ben Hill

In continuation of their National Graphic style campaigns Tommy Hilifiger’ spring/summer ad were shot in Los Angeles landscapes. This season the campaign is more upbeat to echo the renewed optimism and attitude about the America and the brand. Paying tribute to Hollywood's Golden Era and capturing the essence of California cool, the campaign include the look and feel of a film-strip narrative by following different characters at work and play. Breezy scenes staged at familiar locales -- an actor's trailer at Paradise Cove, in Malibu; the exterior of a Beverly Hills villa; cruising Sunset Strip; against the backdrop of the Griffith Park Observatory -- evoke classic imagery. Shot at various locales in LA such as Malibu and Sunset Strip the models look fresh and carefree wearing Hilfiger's palette of red, white, and blue.

15) JIL SANDER
Photographer: Willy Vanderperre, Models: Natasha Poly, Douglas Jewell, Styling: Olivier Rizzo

How would you make differentiate your campaign to others if you are a brand known for minimalism and innovation? Well show it high contrast black & white. For Jil Sander’s spring/summer photographer Willy Vanderperre played with white and shadows making the models’ images seem like abstract sculptures.

16) CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION
Photographer: David Simms, Models: Anna Selezneva,AJ Abualrub, Creative Director: Fabien Baron

The minimalist stark white background of the photos and model Anna Selezneva posing like a robot echoes the futuristic and geometric forms of the Franciso Costa’s Calvin Klein Collection for spring/summer 2009 show. The whole campaign is a meditation on form. Uber minimalist and futuristic.
It’s modern minimalism for men too. Although not as sculptural and space age like as the women’s campaign, it is still very stark and icy. There still a feeling of future world. Model AJ Abuarlrub with his silvery, swept-back hair and glassy blue eyes looks like what Italo Zucchelli vision of what space age jocks would be.

17) BALENCIAGA
Photographer: David Sims. Models: Amanda Laine, Anabela Belikova, Anna Jagodzinska, Anya Kazakova, Diana Farkhullina, Elsa Sylvan, Hanne-Gaby Odiele, Iris Strubegger, Katie Fogarty, Kinga Rajzak

This campaign truly evokes the Balenciaga’s sculptural and futuristic collection for this season. The photos are dramatic, complex and modern.

18) VALENTINO
Photographer: Mert & Marcus, Model: Stephanie Seymour,Andrés Valencoso

Alessandra Facchinetti was on a right track of modernizing the brand Valentino and then they fired her. This campaign really shows Facchinetti’s point of view for the brand. Legendary supermodel Stephanie Seymour embodies the Valentino woman: confident, graceful, sensual, sensual and ageless. The simple concept of the photos made the beautiful clothes stands out. Valencoso provides an elegant masculine images for the campaign.

19) GIORGIO ARMANI
Photographer: Mert & Marcus, Models:Sasha Pivovarova,Jamie Dornan

I love dreamy quality of the photos. Beautiful and the casting are perfect too.

20) BURBERRY
Photographer: Mario Testino, Models: Lily Donaldson, Eden Clark, Alexina Graham, Richard Wyndham, Emily Hope, Alex Pettyfer, George Craig and Sam Beeton.

Embodying an English garden, Burberry spring/summer 2009 campaign evokes the romantic, tranquil mood and beautiful sense of luxury. Mario Testino shots a group of English models dressed in rain- soaked Burberry outfits hanging around on a greenery setting of Petersham Nurseries outside London. The campaign highlights the crumpled classics of the Burberry collection. Christopher Bailey said the inspiration for this season’s campaign came from "Garden People" by Thames & Hudson.
