September is almost over and like me you probably gone through the most this month thick as the holy bible magazines. You probably have seen all the fall ads now. And yes this season the supermodels are back. Kate Moss for Donna Karan and Just Cavalli, Linda Evangelista for Prada, Naomi Campbell for YSL, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer for Chanel and Ferragamo even Lauren Hutton is on Lords & Taylor campaign. There also some diversity for this season with Asian models staring on some campaign like Du Juan for Giorgio Armani, Hye Rim Park for Max Mara, Lakshmi Menon for Givenchy and black models like Liya Kabede for Lanvin, and Chanel Iman for DKNY. So here is my list of top 20 fashion fall 2008 ads.
These ads just evoke luxurious heritage which is what Hermes is all about. The images are so decadent and luxurious they make me just want to cry.

1) MARC BY MARC JACOBS AND MARC JACOBS
You probably think I’m insane choosing these as the top fashion ads. With all the supermodels and highly beautifully styled campaigns for other brands why pick a campaign with a guy in a dress?
What makes this ads stand out from the rest is that they make you stop and think, Are these art? Are they ads? Of course they are ads even though the commercial aspects are not obvious. Marc Jacobs and Juergen Teller always have been producing engaging and provocative ads for Marc Jacobs’ own brand for many times now. They usually not about aspirational or selling a dress or a bag but they are about telling us the world of Marc Jacobs.
It started with an ad with Kim Gordon in 1997. I think their perfect unions reach the highest mark on their spring campaign with Posh Victoria Beckham. A celebrity whose fame can be describe as a Shakespearean “ Much Ado About Nothing” modeling a collection that seems inspired by Holly Golightly on acid - a collection that looks like critic on celebrity culture. The meaningful collaboration between Marc and Juergen continued to show from this season campaign- putting a male model to star his very girly fall collection is indeed a real interesting and sassy move. The result is a very quirky and yet very sexy images.
Marc Jacobs as a designer is all about mystique, spontaneity, anti-fashion, and underground culture which are main reason why he is one of the few designers who has a great cult following. Buying a Marc Jacobs outfit is like joining a club and understanding that mystery. So just like these ads are about really who gets. These ads the first time I encounter them cause me to pause and think about what are the images are all about. It really makes everyone to look and look again.

MARC JACOBS
2) VALENTINO
One word can simply describe these ads, breathtaking. Alessandra Facchinetti as the new head of the house of Valentino manages to capture the essence and respect the heritage of the house with her very soft and light fall collection. These ads showcase them wonderfully specially the one with Angelina Lindval on the pink chiffon dress. The ads are very romantic and modern just like the Valentino women.
5) PRADA & MIU MIU
Miuccia Prada said that her fall 2008 lace collection is all about something feminine and strong with 90’s influence and who is the better to showcase this than non other than 90’s top supermodel Linda Evangelista. The result are beautiful and powerful images that matches the essence of the clothes.
Models: Linda Evangelista, Luis Afonso Schwab; Photographer: Steven Meisel

Fierce!!! Naomi is looking every inch of an icon on these ads and personifying what YSL stands for – Glamour and Luxe.

4) DONNA KARAN NEW YORK
This campaign looks very old Hollywood. There’s a romantic classicism with a touch of darkness on the photos. Fashion icon Kate Moss looks like quintessential Hollywood beauty icons. There is an atmosphere of nostalgic, sultry and decadence on these images. Donna Karan said that she wanted to evoke the former glamour of Orient Express in this campaign.Mode: Kate Moss; Photographer: Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott

5-A) MIU MIU
Moving Miu Miu brand to Paris, what else is the best way to showcase the brand than get the French celebrity that is emblematic of the move? Vanessa Paradis was the perfect choice to star the fall campaign. The photos are modern, quirky and sporty that matched the Miu Miu's fall 08collection.

7) LOEWE
These ads captured the essence of what Spanish luxury is all about. Classic beauty supermodel Stephanie Seymour dark ensembles are the perfect backdrop to Loewe's luxurious leather handbags made up in gorgeous hues and finishes. The campaign is all about melding the old and the new world and I think the ads manage to capture that.8) CHANEL
The essence of Coco Chanel’s “poverty de luxe” in updated version is magnificently showcased in these photos9) LOUIS VUITTON
What is more perfect to showcase a collection inspired by silhouette of Claude Montana and Thierry Mugler is to hire a model known for her perfect shape. Sexy Eva Herzigova looks so amazing from these photos.10) CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION
Francisco Costa (women) and Italo Zucchelli (men) of Calvin Klein have been steadily moving the label into modernist discipline. This campaign manages to capture the clothes’ rigid minimalist style, modernist cut and shape that are almost architectural. The photos are very futuristic, sleek and haunting. Not to mention they showcase my favourite piece from the collection (the grey jacket with industrial webbing that usually used in patio furniture.) I’m going to hunt down that jacket in every store here.11) VERA WANG
Vera Wang’s fall 2008 collection was inspired by Czarist Russia and modernist painter Kees van Dongen. So it is inevitable that for this ad shot by Steven Meisel staring the ever talented supermodel Stella Tennant to look so decadent and old world and yet very modern. Philip Crangi’s massive rhinestone jewelries added the perfect touch.12) NINA RICCI
Both genius in their own respective field, photographer Mario Sorrenti mastery in capturing the mood and designer Olivier Theysken in creating beautiful and poetic clothes produced a campaign that is beautiful, sublime and edgy. And casting one of the most talented models right now, Natasha Poly just added to the majesty of these images. I love the stop-action, hair flipping and the rain drops on the photos.13) DOLCE & GABBANA, D&G
Dark and sexy is what Dolce & Gabbana is all about. Steven Klein always captures the essence of the brand and the collection. Merging London’s late-sixties bohemia with contemporary Milanese style- the result are dark, cryptic, erotically charged images.
Mario Testino also did a great job for D&G. The ads look like the Adam’s family portrait on their farm.

14) GIORGIO ARMANI
These ads remind me of Wong Kai War’s film. I love the vivid colours and dramatic motion captured in these photos, not to mention the great casts.15) GUCCI
When Frida Gianini dreamt of tousle haired gypsies and their wild Cossak style for her fall 2008 collection it is somehow predictable that Gucci ad will be about young models frolicking on wide open field. It maybe cliché but it still manage to capture the bohemian fantasies and irreverent energy of the collection.
Models: Lily Donaldson, Kasia Struss, Ksenia Kahnovich, Masha Novoselova, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Eniko Mihalik; Photographer:Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin
16) VERSACE
I just simply love the clothes and the background.
Haunting, very chic, beautiful clothes and great casting, how could you not love this campaign.
Models: Liya Kebede, Raquel Zimmerman; Photographer: Steven Meisel
18) MISSONI
I love how these photos look more like an editorial spread rather than just ads.19) SALVATORE FERRAGAMO
These ads remind me of those vintage Vogue editorial of Richard Avedon and Suzy Parker.
Models: Claudia Schiffer, Roberto Bolle; Photographer: Mario Testino

20) GIVENCHY
How can you not like a campaign that describes itself as a diverse family portrait specially in fashion where diversity seems rare? And two word Laksmi Menon. Enough said.
Models: Lara Stone, Mariacarla Boscono, Lakshmi Menon, Natasha Poly, Kristen Owen, Simon Nessman; Photographer: Inez & Vinoodh
