NEOPRENE IN FASHION

Invented by DuPont scientists on April 17, 1930, Neoprene (trade name used by DuPont Performance Elastomers.) or polychloroprene is a family of synthetic rubbers that is used in a wide variety of applications, such as in wetsuits, laptop sleeves, orthopedic braces, fly fishing waders, .etc. Lately Neoprene has been appearing in a lot of designers’ collection, from accessories to clothes. Here is a brief look on the fashion using Neoprene.

YOHJI YAMAMOTO FALL/WINTER 2001-2002

Using his clever use of proportions and great knowledge in fabrics, Yohji Yamamoto blended technical fabrics like neoprene and active sports looks with his own color palette and arty and edgy dimension and end up producing amazing and brilliant modern clothes.


BALENCIAGA SPRING/SUMMER 2003

Balenciaga for spring 2003 Nicholas Ghesquière's said . "I wanted to contrast structure and fluidity," he said. "Things that give power to femininity." The result was neutral tailoring with short, flounced cutaway dresses in vivid colors and flower prints, delicately suspended over neoprene bras.




COMME DES GARCONS SPRING/SUMMER 2005
Hell's Ballerinas- Stiff leather or neoprene jackets were cut with rolled-up sleeves, and openwork inserts mimicked the cooler vents in a motorcycle engine, and curviform foam-rubber seat-covers sometimes morphed into skirts. Done in black, tan, or orange, the jackets had the heft of a truly cool idea and made a strangely beautiful contrast with the fragile pinks and whites of the tutus.



ALEXANDER MCQUEEN FALL/WINTER 2007
Alexander McQueen showed laid-back surfer dudes mixed with 1950’s bad boy theme collection for spring/summer 2008. The look was all about healthy seasoned travelers with a boogie board neoprene bag-cum-suit bag-cum-rucksack and neoprene leggings for summer.
"I wanted to bring men out into the sunlight and celebrate the idea of sun-kissed freedom of expression and movement with the coolest of attitudes. Summer should be a time for travel and exploration, so why not explore the boundaries of men's clothing too?" Alexander McQueen.

Inspired by surfer in Whitby on the North Sea Burberry’s Christopher Bailey designed jackets in neoprene and shoes.

Raf Simons for his vanity and performance themed fall/winter 2009/2010 collection mixed classic suits in conventional fabrics with neoprene shrugs.



CALVIN KLEIN COLLECTION FALL/WINTER 2009-2010

Italo Zucchelli for men's Calvin Klein collection for fall/winter 09/10 offered coats that had a shimmering reflective surface. The suits was not only made of neoprene, but the futuristic fabric was cut and padded.

Ooooh, that's a great idea. A neoprene sleeve for my nalgene or coffee mug would be really cool. I think compact bag, made from light neoprene material, offers optimal protection for sensitive display screens. I think every collection is too good. thank you for shearing your post.

Great list of designers using neoprene, very helpful in my research. A few extra names to add Junko Koshino started using it in her A/W 1988 collection and Maria Cornejo recently used it in her S/S 2013 collection.
